Ottawa waives repayment of up to $434.8 million in dental care for people wrongly enrolled despite having private coverage

A remission order published in the Canada Gazette on 21 October (SOR/2026-204) forgives debts for people who incorrectly attested they had no private dental insurance to join the Canadian Dental Care Plan in its first three benefit periods, then were found ineligible. Interest is waived and anyone who already repaid is refunded. Health Canada puts the cost at up to $434.8 million and says eligibility will now be checked before enrolment.

Commons public accounts committee votes 5–4 against declaring recovery of $34 million in SDTC payouts “in the public interest”

At its 22 October meeting the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Accounts negatived a Conservative motion to report that recovering the $34 million paid to ineligible projects by Sustainable Development Technology Canada is in the public interest. The five Liberal members voted no; three Conservatives and the Bloc member voted yes. The government told MPs last month it would not seek repayment.
