Ontario starts work on optional digital ID, beginning with the Photo Card, and promises a law guaranteeing physical cards

Ontario announced on 23 October a phased introduction of optional digital provincial credentials. Consultations begin in late 2026, a digital Ontario Photo Card comes first, and digital driver’s licences and health cards would follow at an unspecified later date. The province says it intends to introduce legislation in late 2027 protecting residents’ right to obtain and use only physical ID.
