Federal judge throws out DOJ lawsuit against New York City’s sanctuary laws

In United States v. City of New York, No. 25-cv-04084 (E.D.N.Y.), Judge Ramón E. Reyes Jr. granted the city’s motion to dismiss on 15 October 2026, and judgment was entered on 16 October. He held that the United States lacks standing and that its preemption and intergovernmental-immunity claims fail. He also found the anticommandeering doctrine bars the relief sought. His footnote says every prior federal challenge to such provisions has been rejected.
